Jason Wilsher-Mills unveiled his new inflatable sculpture in Summer 2019, Talking Rhubarb Totem.
The ‘Talking Rhubarb Totem’ is an interactive inflatable sculpture, brought to life through augmented reality. Developed with the group Wakefield District Sight Aid, the piece aims to expand sculptures sensory. The sculpture was part of the Index Festival 2019.
Jason worked with the visual impairment group and interviewed participants over a period of time, with the audio files being part of the ‘Rhubarb’ experience. The sculpture even had the scent of rhubarb, which represents the region's major export.
The sculpture was designed based on a 30-year-old sketch Jason made when he was an art student at Wakefield College, studying in Foundation Art & Design.
The commission was generously supported by Wakefield Council.
