Index festival presents ‘Humans of Wakefield’ on the Free City Bus. Wakefield based artists Lucy Quinn and Viv Owen were commissioned to document passengers with quick 5-minute portraits, photographs, and interviews on board the bus.
About the artists
Lucy Quinn created Humans of Wakefield in 2019 for Long Division Festival, as a way to prevent stereotypes about people in Wakefield. The project is a photography and story-based experiment inspired by the ‘humans of…’ photography. With this project Lucy aims to eliminate stereotypes about Wakefield and encourage people to talk one another.
We all have a story, what is yours?

Viv Owen is an artist working in Wakefield. Her drawings and paintings are inspired by faces: people from film and TV, friends, family and passersby. For the past 8 years, Viv has made Daily Drawings: a small-scale sketch in pen, drawn in the moment with no preparation or underdrawings. On the Art Bus for Index Festival, Viv will be drawing passengers during their journey as they chat to Lucy Quinn for the Humans of Wakefield project. Join in, see drawings take shape and keep your portrait afterwards.
