A display of 7 metal sculptures by some of the most notable British sculptors of the 20th century, including Elisabeth Frink and Eduardo Paolozzi, selected to coincide with the Yorkshire Sculpture International (22 June to 29 September 2019), the UK’s largest dedicated sculpture festival which builds upon the regions rich history as the birthplace of pioneering sculptors such as Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore.
As well as reflecting the quality of the Arts Council’s Collection of modern British sculpture the animal-themed works have been chosen to reflect and contrast with Wakefield Museum’s display of natural history specimens by local eccentric and conservationist Charles Waterton. As well as preserving wildlife via his pioneering approach to taxidermy Waterton also constructed his own ‘creations’ using parts from a variety of exotic animals often to disturbing effect!
